This fascinating beetle is known under various names. The Latin name is Lucanus cervus, either the European stag beetle or deer beetle.
You may encounter this beetle in the Netherlands and Belgium, but they are very rare in these areas.
The flying deer is one of the largest beetles in Europe and can reach a total length of more than 9 cm. The Dutch name is due to the enormous jaws of the males. These are branched at the end and are reminiscent of a deer's antlers. The females lack these antlers, which makes them easy to distinguish from the males.
